The Benefits of Blogging for Your Dental Practice

A consistently updated blog is one of the best ways to stay atop search engine results. A good blog builds traffic and back links, which means more leads, which means more business.

Blogging Builds Dental Website Traffic
Google's latest updates seem to evaluate websites based on their content more heavily than before. Prior to the recent update, Google relied predominantly on back links (links to a website from other websites) for its rankings algorithms. Now the official Google position reads: "In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by creating high-quality sites that users will want to use and share."

Clearly, Google is moving away from back links, likely due to greater confidence in its own algorithms and in response to the successes of SEO companies in manipulating back links. It is generally agreed that blogging is one of the best ways to increase page rank right now, for two reasons: (1) It provides a consistent flow of text-rich material for search engines to "read" and index, and (2) the new Google is looking for quality content, which professionals can provide by blogging.

Blogging Builds Back Links for Dental Marketing
Back links are still important, though, in all search engine rankings, even Google's. And blogging is one of the simplest ways to build back links. Indeed, the link above is a back link to that website, and they only got it because of their blog.

Again, though, the focus is on quality content. Post quality content and earn traffic; post quality content and earn back links.

Blog Updates Key to Dental Website Marketing
Dental websites should be dynamic, i.e., content should change over time. Search engines index websites with more or less frequency depending on how often the websites are updated. Thus, a static page will be indexed only very seldom. And if the whole website is static, then the search engines will visit only rarely.

Blog posts, however, are just the sort of material that search engines feed on. If the website includes a good blog, the search engines will note that it is frequently updated with useful material and thus they will visit more frequently, re-indexing each of the website's pages each time. Additionally, the website will appear more useful and credible to the search engines, so it will rank higher in search results.

Website Blog Posting and Maintenance Options
Many dentists are writing their own blog posts. They take a few hours each week and put together 500 words or so about dentistry or something related thereto.

It can be relaxing and rewarding to write about those things at which we are most expert. Young or beginning dentists, especially, are blogging, both because they tend to be more familiar with blogging and because they tend to have less business to keep them busy early in their careers.

Of course, many dentists choose to hire copywriters to populate and manage their blogs. It's a good alternative for those who recognize the benefits of a quality blog, but do not have the time to spend blogging.
